What a great chronicle of your walk to church, with the point of it all at the end. I never really understood, in my heart, the different between Catholic and Protestant until I was out of college. The saxophone quartet I played in was invited to do the music for a Methodist church's Sunday service. It was nice, readings and a sermon and a collection -- and that was it! At the end, it felt so unfinished to me. I had attended Mass the Saturday evening before to fulfill my Sunday obligation, but I went back the next Sunday with a much stronger sense of why I would remain Catholic.
